JEE Main Counselling 2020 and seat allocation procedure: Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) Counselling has been set up under the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD). It manages the entire procedure of seat allocation for admissions to 97 top institutes including 23 IIT, 31 NIT, 23 IIIT and 20 Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTI).
An admission to all the academic programs offered by these institutes will be made through a single platform every year. The prime motto of the JEE Main counselling is to assist engineering aspirants in seeking admissions in top engineering colleges across the country. There will be three major factors considered in the Counselling and seat allotment of JEE MAIN 2020.

As per 2020 is concern, JoSAA will hold the JEE Main 2020 counselling and seat allotment for the all qualified candidates. The JEE Main 2020 result has been declared on April 30, 2020. The online registration process for JEE Main Counselling 2020 probably will be held during the 2nd and 3rd week of June 2020. There are some important steps-wise procedures to participate in JEE Main Counselling and seat allotment for the Engineering aspirants.
JEE Main 2020 Counselling: Seat Allotment Procedure
There are 6 important steps followed by all qualified and interested students in JEE Main Counselling and seat allotment procedure. They are given below:
- Step 1: Online Registration
- Step 2: Online Choice Filling and Locking
- Step 3: Seat Allotment
- Step 4: Acceptance of Seat and Fee payment
- Step 5: Documents Verification at Help Centers
- Step 6: Final Reporting to the Allotted Institute

Step 1: Online Registration
Online registration is mandatory for all the qualified candidates. They will have to register themselves in the official website with the same roll no and password of JEE Main Examination.
Step 2: Listing and choosing of the proffered Colleges
After the successful registration, candidates will have to choose their preferences of the institutes as per their convenient.
Step 3: Allotment of available Seat and Ranking
The seats will be allotted to candidates on the basis of the merit rank, choice of colleges and availability of seats. As per the schedule of JoSAA, there will be mock allotment of seats in first two rounds. This procedure will give the clear idea to candidates about the process of seat allotment and they will also be able to understand and choose better preferences wisely in the remaining main rounds.
Step 4: Acceptance of Seat and Fee payment
Candidates will have to choose any one of the following 4 options given after the allotment of seat:
- Freeze: Candidates will choose this option if they are satisfied with the seat they have allotted and don’t have wish to take part in further round of process.
- Float: Candidates will choose this option if they want to upgrade their seat with option of keeping their seat in further round of process.
- Slide: Candidates will choose this option if they want to upgrade the course in the same college in further round of process.
- Withdraw: Candidates will choose this option if they have already accepted the seat. They can withdraw the seat by reporting at the institute allotted before the last round of seat allotment by choosing this option.
Payment Procedure
Candidates will have to pay fee via online payment mode of SBI Net Banking/ e-Challan. The fee structure is given below:
Fee for General/OBC candidates = Rs. 45,000/-
Fee for SC/ ST/ SC-PwD/ ST-PwD/ GEN-PwD/ OBC-NCL-PwD Candidates =Rs. 20,000
Step 5: Process of Verification
The list of documents that will be verified by the candidates at the help centers are given below:
- 3 Latest passport size photos of the candidate (same as uploaded during registration)
- Photo- Identity Card
- Provisional seat allotment letter
- Seat acceptance and fee payment proof
- Admission Card of JEE Main 2020
- Proof of Date of birth (Preferably Matriculation certificate)
- Score Card sheet of JEE Main 2020
- Mark list of Class XII
- Category certificate (as applicable)
Step 6: Reporting to the Allotted Institute
Candidates will have to report at the institute allotted after all verified documents. They will have to pay the balance fees at the time of reporting at the institute.

Scope of JEE Main counselling procedure
JEE Main 2020 Counselling and Seat Allotment procedure conducted for different category of candidates in different institutes. The scope of this procedure is stated below:
IITs and IIIT Institutes
The scope is PAN India – It is open for all candidates across India.
NIT Institutes
- Home State candidates: Reservation of 50% only for candidates with same state code of eligibility as that of the institute.
- Other State candidates: Reservation of 50% for candidates of other states.
GFTI Institutes
- Some renowned institutes like BIT, Ranchi, Mesra and IIEST Shibpur: Candidates from home state and other state can opt to these institutes.
- Assam University: PAN India applications
- For other GFTIs: Only Indian candidates can choose those institutions.
The cut-off list of eligible candidates in JEE Main 2020 exam declared on April 30, 2020. The category-wise result declared is given below:

The scheduled JEE Advance 2020 exam will be conducted on May 20, 2020. The scheduled result declaration of the exam will be on June 10, 2020. The process of JEE Main Counselling and seat allotment 2020 will be commenced after the 8-10 days after the announcement of the result of JEE Advance. During the seat allotment process, there will be two mock rounds followed by seven main rounds.
